on the campaign trail as president obama and mitt romney hunkers down and prepares for wednesday's debate. a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows a very tight race. so both campaigns see tomorrow night as a big opportunity. this presidential campaign has been going on for nearly two years and finally it's debate season for the nominees. the time when americans seem to really start paying attention. president obama's rehearsing with senator john kerry and mitt romney is squaring off against senator rob portman. both candidates have challenges and checklists. president obama's working on shorter answers, trying to avoid sounding like the professor he was before the white house. democrats say he needs to look strong and forceful and not appear irritated or impatient. >> they're trying to get him into the mode of being able to answer questions, short, concisely, and to the point, and so it's much more like his mannerisms and his style and the way he comes across as opposed to information in this. >> reporter: and mitt romney? he has to seem relatable, especially after his 47% comment. how can h

from the first debate between president obama and republican challenger, mitt romney. some are calling these debates a make-or-break moment for romney. it's "your voice, your vote." with just 38 days left to election day. and david kerley joins us from the white house with an inside look at how both sides are prepping. david? >> reporter: good morning, bianna. this is the year that these debates could be critical. so, both candidates are spending a lot of time preparing. heading back to boston for more debate practice, mitt romney would not endorse the view that the debates could be do-or-die for his campaign. >> i don't think anyone would suggest that the debates are not important. i can't tell you how important it will be. it will be a good chance for the president and for me to have a conversation with the american people about our respective views. >> four more years. >> reporter: mr. obama spent a couple of hours practicing yesterday, as well. and has three days set aside for more practice. it's nicknamed debate camp. and near the end of camp, like now, it's a full-on mock debate.

that president obama and mitt romney are going to be debating. we have done she more debates left. at the end of the day, the person who comes out as the candidate most able to get america back on track in terms of jobs and getting people back to work, that candidate has the biggest advantage. on friday with the jobs number, present, we gained some of that advantage. i will not say the september numbers will be a game changer. but i do think we have some good news for the president. host: we are looking at the jobs figures that came out yesterday. we hear from the candidates who spoke yesterday. here is governor romney talking about the jobs numbers released.
